  • Abstract

These records contain documents related to the Ocean Engineering and Sciences Department of Florida Institute of Technology, including its precursors. The OES documents include operational records, pamphlets, and campus publications from the late 1960s through 2000.

  • Biographical / Historical

The Hydrospace Technical Institute (HTI) was founded in 1968 by members of the Florida Institute of Technology administration to provide hands-on training and technicians in the fields of marine science and oceanography. Initially located on the melbourne campus, HTI moved to Cocoa Beach and then to the Jensen Beach Campus in 1972. At this point, the school was renamed into the School of Marine and Environmental Technology (SOMET). When the Jensen Beach Campus closed in 1986, the school was relocated to Melbourne and was incorporated into the newly formed Division of Marine and Environmental Systems, which was later renamed into the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems (DMES).

  • Scope and Contents

The collection contains operational records, student publications, photographs, and pamphlets from founding of HTI until the year 2000. Currently, the majority of the documents relate to HTI and SOMET. However, further accruals are expected for more recent documents related to the department.

  • Arrangement

The collection has been arranged to the file unit level. Series are arranged chronologically, and the subseries are arranged alphabetically. The files within the series are arranged alphabetically, while the documents within the files are mostly in original order, with the publications being rearranged into chronological order.
