Biographical / Historical
The Hydrospace Technical Institute (HTI) was founded in 1968 by members of the Florida Institute of Technology administration to provide hands-on training and technicians in the fields of marine science and oceanography. Initially located on the melbourne campus, HTI moved to Cocoa Beach and then to the Jensen Beach Campus in 1972. At this point, the school was renamed into the School of Marine and Environmental Technology (SOMET). When the Jensen Beach Campus closed in 1986, the school was relocated to Melbourne and was incorporated into the newly formed Division of Marine and Environmental Systems, which was later renamed into the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems (DMES).
