Jamie Cox Papers
Scope and Contents
The Jamie Cox Papers consists of textual, photographic, digital, and three-dimensional materials from 1950 through 2014 that relate to Radiation, Inc.’s administrative, historical, social, marketing, and technical activities. The digital media totals 14.85 GB of data, accessible as MOB and MOV files, including scanned copies of older photos (1950-1970) as well as original photos from reunions held between 1996-2012.

Biographical / Historical
Jamie Cox graduated from the University of Florida in 1977 with a degree in computer science. Upon graduation, Cox began working at Harris Corporation as a software engineer. He retired from Harris Corporation in 2012. Jamie Cox’s father (Marcus “Mel” Cox) and two step-fathers (Earl F. Smith and A. B. Amis) began working at Radiation, Inc. in 1953. Mel Cox and Earl F. Smith both retired from Radiation, Inc.’s successor, Harris Corporation. A.B. Amis retired from Harris Corporation in 1981. Jamie collected Radiation, Inc. memorabilia because of his family’s involvement in the company as well as his general interest in history.
Radiation, Inc. was founded by Homer Denius and George Shaw in 1950. The company was first located in an old naval building at the Melbourne Airport. Facilities were quickly expanded in Melbourne, and later added in Palm Bay, FL and Orlando, FL. When Radiation, Inc. merged with Harris-Intertype in 1967, the company had over 3,000 employees. Radiation, Inc. focused on developing PCM telemetry systems, digital data acquisition systems, and tracking antennas. They were contracted by entities such as Bell Telephone Laboratories, NASA, and the U.S. military. Some prominent projects Radiation, Inc. worked on include: Courier, Igloo White, Mark V (TSC-54), Nimbus, and Telstar.
