Jensen Beach Campus Records

 Collection
Identifier: UA-JBC009

Scope and Contents

The Jensen Beach Campus Records consist primarily of administrative documents regarding the Jensen Beach Campus. While there are news articles in the collection, the majority of the documents in the collection are internal reports and memorandums among the administrative faculty. The documents relate to the acquisition of the Jensen Beach Campus from St. Joseph College, the transfer of students, courses, faculty, and inventory from the campus to the Melbourne Campus, the closure of the Jensen Beach Campus, and its eventual sale. The collection is divided into four series, related to the acquisition, transfer, sale, and operation of the Jensen Beach Campus respectively. The majority of the collection relates specifically to the Jensen Beach Campus transfer, with many of the documents within that series being correspondence between faculty of the Jensen Beach Campus and the administration of FIT. The records of the Jensen Beach Campus are largely limited to the purchase, closure, and sale of the campus by FIT. Because of this, only a small number of documents have been collected that describe the normal operation of the campus.

Biographical / Historical

The Jensen Beach Campus was used by Florida Institute of Technology starting in 1972/1973 for classes in the fields of Oceanography, Marine Sciences, and Applied Technology, mostly for the School of marine and Environmental technology (SOMET). Classes at the campus continued until 1986, when the campus was closed due to a financial deficit. In the years that followed the classes that were taught at Jensen Beach were transferred to the Melbourne campus and the inventory at the Jensen Beach Campus was either transferred to the Melbourne campus or sold to third parties. During the 1990s FIT attempted to sell the Jensen Beach Campus with limited success. Ultimately, the campus was sold in parts to many parties, and was used for many different things, including a retirement home and a park. The entirety of the campus had been sold by 1998.
